The council invites you to have your say about the proposed Dog Control orders for parks, open spaces and highways which would come into force in May.

Find out more and download the consultation documents here.

Don't forget you can also discuss the plans here within the forum. Smile

Dogs should keep their owners on a lead at all times and bark at them when they drop litter!

As usual let’s punish the majority for the behaviour of the few. Let’s stop people power walking in the park in case they bump in to someone and knock them over. Let’s stop kids riding bikes in the park in case they bash into someone. Let’s stop football in the park in case the players fight, let’s stop tennis in the park in case a ball hits you, let’s stop cricket in the park for the same reasons, let’s stop picnics in the park because people don’t pick up their rubbish, lets shut the park because squirrels and foxes live there and they are a nuisance lets in fact just close the parks on health and safety grounds...

Very negative attitude Barold and I would bet that, like most of us, you are simply fed-up with hammers brought in to crush little hazelnuts or lethal weedkiller applied to whole areas simply because removing weeds individually is just too hard.
Anyway, you are a precious breed: a new contributor! So, when the old guard is completely disheartened, we are still seeing new hopeful. Long may you contribute.

I think the new control laws are very good. Time will tell if they are completely right for our Borough. Many of the by laws currently in place have been there since the year dot, and already exclude the use of hammers (I think).

Don't care about any of these rules because nobody else with a dog cares. Yet again, this is another example of political correctness in this country. For hundreds of years people have been taking their dogs to the parks with no problems. Stupid rules like this just make it worse for every one. Lets see some rules for people without dogs and then see how they like having rules chucked at them. There is a pen pusher with nothing better to do right now, thinking about the next bunch of rubbish to document as so called rules. The same people would probably come up with exterminating all dogs and take away the pride and joy they give to 85 percent of this country's population. The parks were made for recreation and the one top thing on the recreation list is being able to walk, run or play with your dog in the park.

I've no strong feelings about dogs and parks generally but, if you're going to talk figures, you may as well get them right rather than spoil your argument with inaccuracies.

Currently, there are approximately 8 million dogs in this country, living in around 24% of its households.

Using 2001 Census figures, the total population of England and Wales is a little over 52 million people, who live in 22,539,000 households, each containing an average of 2.36 people. 24% of households is a little under 5.5million, multiplied by 2.36 results in a total of around 12.75 million people who share their homes with a dog or dogs.

Expressed as a percentage of the population, this is less than 25% - nowhere near the 85% quoted.

You have every right to be cross those of you that own dogs ,unfortunatly it is always the minority that spoil it for the majority in every walk of life .If there was another a way to make these people who dont either control or pick up after their dogs i would welcome it .

but it would appear that they are far too inconsiderate and quite frankly shouldnt even own dogs .being a local resident and mother i am sick and tired of having to constantly be aware that my child may be stepping or even worse falling into a pile of excrement left by yet another lazy dog owner. As i said at the start i am aware that it is the minorty but what else can you do .

I'll tell you what, let's make a new rule for humans using parks - No consumption of food anywhere at all in public parks. Because unfortunately it's the minority of lazy humans that spoil it for the majority by throwing their left over food and containers anywhere they like in the park. I have a dog who may try to eat the left over food thrown on the ground and then get a stomach bug and have to go to the vet.

If we enforce that rule then fine any humans who break it the world would be a much better place for us dog owners.

I tell you what's worse than that - your child falling in a big pile of excrement left in your own garden by some anonymous visiting cat!!! Just as unhealthy as dogs poo...

I didn't mind picking up after my dog (my responsibility) but it really gets my goat that other people's cats use my garden as a giant litter bin.

I think falling into it would be quite unusual as most cats bury their waste unless they're disturbed before they can do so. It's not nice though if they dig up your plants in the process or if you dig up the waste while working in the garden. Most cats dislike the smell of lavender so you could try planting some bushes around your garden or, failing that, maybe you could try actually getting a goat?!Wink

Nell has it about right. Animal excrement found in gardens is quite likely to be that of foxes or hedgehogs.

As to dog control orders - there are quite a few old dogs who need to be controlled.

I suppose moderator is going to wake up and delete, which will be sad because
the two above are quite funny. Julie did start this very British double-entendre but it would be a very lucky person to have a go at Morris and come out smelling of roses!
Will Julie learn?

My reply involved a very normal method of calming old dogs and I am unable to
understand why it was deleted. Since the topic is dog control as well?
Unfortunatly I was too late to read the reply which was probably childish
so no loss there.

Hardly a surprise that you're such an evident expert on old dogs.
