I am sick and tired of carrying my boxes and losing the lids and people stealing my recycling boxes.

Are the Council thinking of introducing wheely bins? I know of other Councils who also provide boxes for food aswell and paper and glass.

It would be nice to be consulted before the Council make decisions like that! After all it is US that have to put up with it!

We don't want wheelie bins in this Borough. The Refuse and Recycling operation is first class here.

Gosh this has been running a while, has anyone got anything to say other than blaming the foxes for everything? No wonder nobody has added anything since June!

I have two plastic dustbins and the plastic sacks go in there until it is collection day. It's a simple solution that dates back to the days when dustmen picked up your bin and took it to the truck, plastic bags being a rarity. (No I am under 50 thank you!) I've never had any bother with that, even though there are several foxes in the area. If anything, it's my cat that attacks bags where other people have put in meat bones without double wrapping them.

As for the recycle bins. They aren't well designed. They are lightweight so they are easy to carry, but when there's a gust of wind they end up all over the street - as do the plastic bags and anything else that isn't tied down - so it's not always thieving. I know my neighbours opposite got fed up with their boxes blowing around and gave up - they have extended and don't have a sideway to tuck them down out of the way. The newer boxes have clip on lids, but the rest of us use a brick or elastic to tie them on. Sometimes these are not put back in the box when it is emptied.

So - use a little thought and bags should not be a problem. Why should my taxes pay for wheelie bins, when there are already plenty of alternative solutions. If people want wheelie bins they can buy them and clean them out themselves, but until all the dustcarts are equipped to be able to lift them, I'd be more interested in dealing with:
* people who don't bother tying up their bags so that the contents spill out
* people who leave them on the street side of their wall when there is room on the garden side, just right for dogs to wee up and get caught in buggy wheels - I think the dustmen are not paid enough!
* people who seem to think that the dustmen can take anything and seem ever so surprised when their furniture/carpet/garden refuse is not removed.

I'm sorry but a lot of this is down to personal responsibility. I'm sorry if I've ranted.

People who demand wheelie bins should see for themselves how much more time consuming it is to collect the refuse in that way. Most bags are light, especially if you recycle your glass bottles and jars, and the operatives can throw them in the cart very easily. Our long road is cleared in a few minutes. And, there is no lingering smell.
In Buckhurst Hill, they have small wheelie-bins, (to encourage recycling) and it takes ages to attach them to the automatic system to empty them in the cart and the smell!!!
If I was a resident there I would complain bitterly. For once, all power to Redbridge good sense.
Well done to Diane for reopening the topic.

In Doncaster (South Yorks) Wheelie bins are brilliant, they are even cleaned out by the bin men, and I dont see much rubbish there. I dont think the council would be able to provide wheelie bins for every house hold. They want to sell off land that is already being used constructively towards the environment as it is.

please put things in perspective - in Seven Kings we do not even have enough litter bins along the high road to deal with the rubbish from the 40 takeaways that this Coucil has authorised to open behind closed doors!!!

wheelies bins are not going to save the world, you just have to learn to create less waste and recycle. Third world countires do more recycling than the uk. People also need to use bins in streets and stop throwing litter out for others to clean up. You reap what you sow. Takeways should must additonal tax for the rubbish they create.

Keep Ilford Tidy.

Hi,

i have read a number of your posts and agree with you completely. I belive one of the reason this borough is in decline is due to the inaction of its residents. I am more than happy join any kind of action group that may exist to bring some pride back into the borough.

I don't think it’s up to the council to provide Wheelie bins - I have bought "Dustbins", they are not that expensive, why should the council foot the bill?
