The parish hall has been closed down because apparently the building was in a state of disrepair, and I know that the Catholic Chuch are closing down all these clubs. It is a shame as it was a great meeting place for lots of people, catholic and non catholic alike. The hall is now going to have a change of use although it has been pointed out to parishioners that it will revert back to the parish after a period of five years. :|

motherteresa fails to mention that this is being done by the parish preist completely against the wishes of the parishioners.
Parishioners no longer have a say in the matter as the parish council is a closed shop and hed no agm in june of this year.

I have heard this all before.
In Chingford the Priest wanted to move the font against the wishes of the parishoners
Guess who got their way??

motherteresa is completely wrong about the state of the building being in a state of disrepair – the day before the parish priest changed the locks it complied with health and safety regs – I was there supporting a charitable function as was Holly Willoughby.

crazycat has hit the nail on the head – as long as the money pours in, the views of parishioners do not matter.

Regarding the 'state of disrepair' this is what the priest said; I know that this is not the case, but obviously most people don't have access to the hall now. Only the people close to the priest are allowed access, ie. for gardening and letting in prospective tenants. Perhaps the building behind the church could also be leased as a commercial let - apparently it comes with a lovely roll top bath!;) ;)

By the way, i was at the charity function just before the hall closed and what a brilliant night it was - Holly was lovely! There was more community spirit in the venue that night than there is now in the church! :?

Hi all, I'm new to this blogging.

I first read about the situation in the Ilford Recorder and have read your comments re the closure of St Augustines Hall, I'm not advocating breaking the law but have you considered some form of peaceful protest?
January is a quiet news month and would be the best time to get any press coverage.

Good luck with your campaign.

Are you saying that the Hall was a going concern and they closed it anyway?

Surely you don't hold the church to the same standards as public bodies? If the congregation knew how things worked they wouldn't want to play anymore.

:d :d :d

I am not saying all Priests are wrong, just a few who have no feelings for the parishoners.
The church I attend has a wonderful Priest who is very sincere and very kind.

re ecto2001 question, I have been led to beieve that the Social Club was very profitable and had over £30,000 in the bank when the priest closed it. It is difficult to to confirm this as the social club, now with a board of directors made up of all preists and the diocesan financial controller, are late lodging the last set of accounts.

:o I recall that LBR originally gave that land to the Catholic Chruch, specifically to build a Parish Hall for the Community - bit naughty to use it for other things. I hope the local councillors take a close look at any request for change of use and consider what the Community is losing as well as what it may be gaining.

Do you mean that the land was given by the taxpayers for one purpose and now the church wants to make money out if it by renting it out? Surely they can't do that!

There are good and bad preists, most of them are good

If what OldBoy wrote is true surely the council will investigate

There are young people in our community crying out for somewhere to meet, surely at least an attempt to create a "youth centre" would not be a bad thing. Agreed it would have to be non-denominational in order to readily appeal to a wide section of people, but if the building isn't actually owned by a church that shouldn't be a problem surely. I would think there would be no desperate shortage of helpful volunteers to aid in setting up and running the place. Any suggestions ?

The Church was given the land - the church can do what it likes with it...
