Dear forum users,

We are alerting you to some changes to the site which will take effect from 31 October 2009.

We think you may be particularly interested in our new local neighbourhood discussion forums, Neighbourhood Matters. These new, locality based, forums will operate within a post moderated model. This means that your messages will be published as you submit them, without delay. The site will however, continue to be regularly monitored to ensure that users abide by our terms & conditions. The borough wide forum platform will be retained and will continue to operate with a pre-moderated model. However, all existing forum discussions will be locked and the discussions archived. The current forums will be closed from 6.00pm on Wednesday 28 October 2009 to enable us to move to our new platforms and you will not be able to post any messages until they open again on 31 October 2009.

As a registered site user you will shortly receive an email which will provide more detail on the new facilities that Redbridgei will be able to offer from 31 October. We’re quite excited about the opportunities our new look website will offer for community networking and hope that you will be too.

Regards

Redimanager

Sounds like a little bit of autumn cleaning to me and a trip to the tip to get rid of the rubbish!
As far as having civilised discussions with my neighbours over a cup of tea and a borrowed cup of sugar, forget it!
I want to be able to talk to Morris so that he can come back with a sharp reply.
I like sharp me!

How very kind of you to think for me and for other users!! What a pity you did not think to CONSULT those users before allegedly "THINKING" what might interest us. Shades of the Stasi/KGB thought police. :( :x

If it "airs"local problems maybe its a step forward, if enough people use it, we shall have to see. The level of humour
exhibited though is great, I enjoy the sparring between Mr Hickey, Anne, and weggis and others its very ......whats the
word?

Yet another Huge step backwards step!

I'm all in favour of a brand new future, but why lock all existing forum discussions?

Why can't we have both?

Bring in your new "Neighbourhood Matters" discussion forums - BUT LEAVE THE OLD ONE'S RUNNING!!!!!!!!!!!:x :x :x :x

Why are you intending to "lock" present discussions?
Has someone complained?

What does "archived" mean? Will we still be able to read them?

So many questions yet such a short time for you to answer them!!!!!

Redimanager and the team may be “excited” but I am underwhelmed. The fact is that when Red-i was launched in 2007 it had “Neighbourhood Forums” in the form of one for each of the 21 Wards. These forums were not well used partly due to councillors [with a few notable exceptions] not using them to engage with their constituents. The result of the last review was that these forums were removed leaving just the 7 forums based on Area Committees, as sub groups of the borough.

Using evidence and experience to guide decisions does not seem to be a characteristic being used here? This is not a criticism of Redimanager and the team. They know the score, I have discussed it with them at length, I know they understand. The problem is that this re-launch is being funded by a Government grant because they want to encourage “community participation” and are prepared to spend taxpayers money on daft schemes like this one to make it “look like” they are doing something constructive. Redbridge will no doubt get an “Award” too and it will be trumpeted as a success.

The red-i forums are following the same pattern as all other forums. They operate on the 1:9:90 rule.
90% of users are the “audience”, or lurkers. The people tend to read or observe, but don’t actively contribute.
9% of users are “editors”, sometimes modifying content or adding to an existing thread, but rarely create content from scratch.
1% of users are “creators”, driving large amounts of the social group’s activity. More often than not, these people are driving a vast percentage of the site’s new content, threads, and activity.

As of earlier this morning there were 9913 posts on Red-i. 50% of these have come from only 10 users, one of whom has not contributed for some time. 75% have come from 40 users but quite a few of them haven’t been seen for quite a while. Of the most recent 100 posts 80% come from only 8 users and two of them are known to live in the same “neighbourhood”.

Government attempts at social manipulation rarely, if ever, work.

Hi weggis me friend! Do we have a definite definition of neighbourhood?
I think not! Look for instance at Barkingside High Street being the border between Area 3 and Area 4 and, the High Street itself, the tarmac, that is, being no man's land belonging to TFL!
As far as neighbourhood is concerned, two friends living opposite are separated by the Iron Curtain!
All the same, your published contributions do contribute to us mere mortals to get a faint idea of what is going on!

And neither does Censorship!

Tomorrow there will be a motion in Parliament that MPs will debate and vote on regarding the publishing of Local Spending Reports - which will show a breakdown of how all public money is spent - something that is crucial for democratic accountability and government transparency. This motion is for Early Day Motion 1064 which has cross party support.

Does this not apply in Redbridge?

As the forums have failed to retain contributors, particularly since
1. the severe tightening of moderation
2 the shortening of moderation hours

the number of contributors spread over a large number of Neighborhoods will ensure a series of moribund forums, with some
having no input whatsoever. I see no point in contributors talking to themselves nor will they!
Redbridge seem determined to follow the pattern of most Council Forums to kill them off, the phrase that comes to mind is
"If you cant stand the heat get out of the kitchen", which is what Redbridge has done, instead of going forward, they have bailed out. Officers and Councilors are both to blame, Councillors failing to engage despite all having numerous training courses in how to respond on the forums and Officers for failing to take to heart the Chief Executive's instructions about answering questions, for example Legal and Democratic Services taking 10 weeks to answer 2 simple questions, there are a very few notable exceptions Libraries and Regeneration/Planning. The few Councils where they work is because both councillors and Officers join in and where the response time to questions is good.

The most go-ahead councils have a wide variety of choices to ask questions of their council
which include E-petitions which the councils will have a mandatory obligation to provide in November or December, another example of the council only reacting rather than "an award winning innovative website" leading the way.

Rest in Peace
