Im sure our Councillors have not gone the way of some of the members of parliament, but could we have some scrutiny anyway? Just to be open and transparent, fairplay etc

So how much do Councillors spend on average on expenses? Does it depend on factors, such as how many committees they may be involved with or what? is there a maximum or a minimum?

Will add to that expenses for Senior Officers as well As has been well documented there is a strong correlation between lower council Tax and Transparency, transparency is not just complying with your statutory requirements, but goes a lot further.

The data provided from the links at the bottom of this page http://www.redbridge.gov...cillors_allowances.aspx
provide a useful starting point. You can see from the data here that the actual level of out-of-pocket expenses, as distinct from allowances, is extremely small. Partly this is because the vast majority of commitments councillors have are within the Borough and don't involve any expense. In some cases expenses incurred as part of a conference or other event attended by a group of members and officers are billed back to the council directly and therefore never declared as individual expenses - this weakness in the disclosure process we're looking to tighten up for the future, so that all expenses are properly and publicly declared.

Do councillors pay taxes on the same conditions as the rest of us in Redbbruge or do they have privileges?

The "allowances" are subject to income tax at the individual's personal rate of liability and, where appropriate, national insurance contributions. Those who choose to join the pension scheme will also pay the appropriate contributions.

Morris is correct on the tax and national insurance issue. HM Revenue & Customs treat Councillors as employees of the local authority and they are subject to Income Tax and National Insurance through the PAYE system like any other Council employee.
