Our council, in its infinite and inspirational wisdom, decided as part of its 2011 budget slashing to cut the grant paid to the Kenneth More Theatre Company. Now, as part of its parking policy, it has also decided to charge for evening use of the unattended (and therefore virtually cost-free) Town Hall car park. Given the extent of town centre parking restrictions, and the fact that the council flogged off some time ago a former surface car park adjacent to the library, there is scarcely anywhere else to park within the vicinity of the Theatre.
So patrons of the theatre will soon have to pay not only a higher price for their tickets in order that the Theatre can maintain its income at a time of reduced subsidy, they will also have to pay and display for use of the unattended car park in our increasingly slum-like town centre.
Is the council's hidden agenda to force closure of the Theatre by stealth so that the site can be sold for construction of yet another hideous block of high rise grotty flats?

The Town Hall Car Park is itself a prime development site. It is ideally situated and suited for a replacement swimming pool being served by numerous, frequent and reliable Red Things on wheels at its southern flank. It would also have the advantage of its own sustainable heating system from the Hot Air generated by the adjacent building. Those Theatre goers, Councillors and Officers who still wish to use their own private transport have a perfectly good multi-storey car park a few yards down the road or the bicycle parking farcilities in Oakfield Road.
This would enhance, supplement and support Redbridge Council’s documented and approved Local Development Framework strategy of providing homes and amenities at public transport hubs so that car use is reduced, minimised or eradicated.

Too bad Morris Hickey and Weggis aren't in charge. Everything in Redbridge would be perfect then.

For someone who does not hesitate to insult or criticize others, Morris Hickey is remarkably thin-skinned.

But has the Monster Raving Loony Party ever won an election in Redbridge?
