Dear Scrutiny in Redbridge,

Any chance of you stapling a few hard copy survey forms to Cllr Shoaib Patel's portfolio for when he comes to speak at our coffee morning next week? Our clientele is mostly non-internet.

Thanks for the tip off Barkingside 21! I will arrange for some to be sent to him.

The Chief Highways and Cleansing Officer confirmed that, although the bins are on a private site, the Council works with retail outlets to ensure that they are well maintained and regularly emptied.

Could perhaps Cleansing and Planning talk to eaach other just occasionally? Then perhaps the facilities at supermarkets might have some uniformity of provision about them. As it is Sainsbury (Newbury Park) has no facility for glass containers, and Tesco (Barkingside) has none for paper. It's all very well doing our bit to save the planet - but we don't want to have to burn fossil fuel unnecessarily to do so.

Thanks for your comments Mr Hickey, I'll feed this back.

Please see response below from the Recycling team.

The only banks at the Sainsburys Newbury Park site that we have any responsibility for are the Tetra Pak bins, the rest owned by and emptied by Sainsburys. Likewise, none of the bins at Tesco Barkingside are ours.

We are currently working to improve the interactive map on Redbridge i so that it shows the types of materials that can be recycled at each bring site, rather than just the locations of the bring sites, however, we can only do this for the sites that are the Borough’s responsibility.

Yes, I'm well aware of that as are others. But there are two points:

1 The standard facility provisions required should be specified as a condition for granting planning permission for the recycling sites; and

2 The appallingly untidy condition of some of the sites should result in action against their owners under the relevant provisions of the Environmental Protection Act.

And here's what NOT to do.

Co-mingling muddle from Wembley Matters in Brent.

You will have to click on the link to see the video.

Isn’t it amazing how different councils can come up with such different waste regimes. I suppose that’s diversity for you, or is it the market?

I should point out that here in Redbridge we stopped co-mingling some time back, separating paper from other recyclables due to glass shard contamination. We still only had one box, but you could ask for another or put the paper in a plastic bag inside the box. Last May we all got an additional blue box for paper and cardboard the latter having been introduced at that time.

In 2009 we started green garden waste kerbside collection but only from April to October, which has been a huge success. It doesn’t include kitchen waste or food but we have a BioMRF at Jenkins Lane where this is separated out from landfill waste. The green waste is also collected in a heavy duty reusable green bag which is much easier to store when not in use.

The big improvement we could make here is plastic as demonstrated by “Weggis” above.

Hello Redbridgers

I'm hoping I can resurrect this thread to get some kitchen waste advice!

I'm fairly new to the area and live in a flat complex, so we don't have a garden in which to house a lovely green compost maker in which to put all of the kitchen scraps. I HATE putting veg peelings, egg shells etc into the rubbish and was wondering if Redbridge has a system for collecting food waste for composting somewhere? OR whether someone in the area has a compost bin and would like some stuff to feed it with on a regular basis?! (I momentarily thought about putting a composter on the balcony, but as we're not even supposed to hang clean washing on there I can't see that going down too well...)

Thanks in advance!

Holly

Hello Holly, and welcome to this forum.

Our man on the spot is Cllr Paul Canal, currently Chairman of a working party looking in to all this stuff, and is on record on Twitter only yesterday saying that Redbridge should follow Croydon and "roll out food waste service to flats".

Unfortunately, we are dealing with a cash strapped Local Authority run by brothers Grim so I wouldn't hold your breath.

If you could give a rough indication of where you live in this Award Winning borough there are some allotmenteers, and garden composters, on here who may well be interested in your veggie peelings. If so suggest you make arrangements via PMs.
