A Redbridge Council youth worker has picked up a special recognition award for helping young people in the Borough secure their Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

Nikki Bracken received the special recognition award from the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, when she was invited to St James's Palace at the end of last year.

Nikki joined Redbridge Council as a volunteer in 1995 and became a member of the Youth Service in 1998. Since taking on the role of Duke of Edinburgh Youth Worker in 2000 she has helped around 4000 young people achieve either a bronze, silver or gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Nikki works hard organising expeditions, running conservation and volunteering projects and generally keeping the scheme in Redbridge on track. She has worked on local expeditions in Lea Valley and Epping Forest and has also led expeditions in Snowdonia and the Lake District.

Every week Nikki works with a large number of young people and parents, supporting the young people to enrol for Duke of Edinburgh, advising them about activities they can take part in to complete their sections and teaching them the skills and knowledge they need to safely complete their expeditions.

Nikki said, "It was a surprise to be nominated for this prestigious award. I have really enjoyed working with the young people over the years. I believe it provides a valuable experience for all young people who take part in the Duke of Edinburgh award. I am looking forward to working with many more young people on future expeditions."

Last year more than 150 young people in Redbridge helped out in their local community, lent a hand in charity shops, learnt new skills and worked hard to improve their fitness to secure the, sought-after, Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Well done Nikki. Smile

Was this achievement not deemed appropriate for comment from either the Leader of the Council or some other cabinet member? Sad
