Have your say about CCTV cameras in Redbridge. An opinion poll published by BBC confirms that a majority of us (75%) want more, not less, survelliance?
Redbridge has about 300 cameras in the borough most of them around Ilford Town Centre, Gants Hill and other hot spots.
Are these cameras good deterant of crimes, anti social behaviour etc. Do you feel more safe when there are cameras? or NOT. Post your views.
Redbridge Council has set up an all party working group to look in to the CCTV strategy 2007 -2012.
As a member of the working group I would be happy to hear from Redbridge residents particularly from Clementswood Ward residents about their views.

PLEASE POST YOUR VIEWS BY REPLYING THIS BLOG.

Councillor Mustafa,

Thank you so much for consulting us.

I would ask for the breakdown of crime figures first.

For each year for the past 5 years:
1) How many crimes have been reported to the Police by ward
2) How many crimes have been reported to the Council by ward (broken bus shelters, graffiti, etc)
3) How many crimes have led to convictions by ward
4) How many Police Officers we have by ward
5) How many Policing hours we have by ward (ie Officers actually on the beat)
6) How many CCTV we have by ward

And with regards to the all party working group may I ask for the groups being represented outside the political parties. For example from education, policing, youth services, community groups, etc.

Thanks

Let me give a quick snap shot to answer your queries and further details for 5 years as requested by you will be given later. You can ask for this information under Freedom of Information Act to the Council and Police authorities yourself. I will also try getting information from the Council & Police authorities and report it back later.

*As reported at Area 6 Committee meeting on 19rh September 2007, over all reported crime figures in Clementswood ward had fallen and were lowest in August 2007.
*Reported nos. of robberies has been cut down by 1/3 over the year between September 2006 to August 2007. However nos. reported for violence against persons stayed same month by month. Nos. of reported theft and handling were also down over the year.
*Apart from regular police staff there are minimum 3 dedicated Police Officers as Safer Neighbourhood Team for every ward. In Clementswood ward there are additional six dedicated police officers for the town centre. The Area 6 Committee has taken up this issue very seriously and a report is going to the Cabinet at their next meeting on Tuesday, 2 October 2007 asking Redbridge Council to make a representation to Met Police asking the provision of a permanent team for the Town Centre.
*There are 37 Column and wall mounted cameras and 6 fixed cameras and two help points in Ilford Town Centre covering up to part of Cranbrook Road to Beal Road and Ilford Lane.
*The CCTV Working Group has agreed to meet representatives of key external organisations dealing with crime and disorder in Redbridge including Police, Fire brigade, Redbridge Victim Support, Redbridge Council for Voluntary Services, Redbridge Chamber of Commerce, Redbridge Race Equality Council and Redbridge Youth Council to name a few. This is part of work programme for next six months.
*CCTV system has proved very successful in detecting crime, deterring criminals, arrest of criminals and most importantly reassuring the public. In 2005, total incidents reported/detected by CCTV were 1948; incidents reported to/by police were 1403 and total arrests were 637. In 2006 these figures were 1884, 1314 and total arrest 902 respectively.

I hope this information provides some answers to your queries not all.

Councillor Mustafa - Much appreciated, and look forward to any other information you can locate. I'll ask the same questions in Area 3 as that is my area.

I think generally having more Area specific information is great.
