Thomas, Redbridgei, or Councillors interested in this areas,
I'd be really keen to know how Cineworld Ilford is supporting young film makers in the area. I know it is a national business but I am sure they would be keen to show their support of the local area if they knew there was support from the council as well.

Sadia Ur-Rehman wrote:Hi All, I am one half of the filmmaking duo that has directed 'Ilford' and the forthcoming short film 'PL4TE5'. I am heartened by the response the film has generated so far, whether it's positive or negative, you guys are out there watching it! After reading the discussion so far, I feel inclined to comment, and I am sure my sister will probably add her thoughts too. Our film 'Ilford' attempts to present the diversity of the town, its people, cultures and many languages. It is just under 10 minutes and we have endeavoured to make it as inclusive as possible in that 10 minutes. I disagree with the comment that is 'Asian-centric', the film engages and documents people's journeys from Bosnia, Jamaica, India, Kenya, Tanzania to Ilford. It also features Brenda, a lovely lady in her late seventies who has spent her whole life in Ilford and has therefore been witness to the changes it has undergone. Lastly Shahida's parents are from Pakistan but she was born and brought up in Ilford. That's 7 short stories in 10 minutes. Quite a tall order I'd say! My sister and I were also born and brought up in Ilford, we have shared a happy childhood and life here, and like many people it is our home. The film is an effort to celebrate the things that are positive about this town. And I believe that the fact that people from such a wide variety of cultural backgrounds and leanings can co exist here is what makes Ilford what it is today. In regards to the comment posted by Nodz. Nodz is correct in imparting the fact that personalised number plates are sold by DVLA. DVLA - (the Government body responsible for the licensing and registration of vehicles) actually makes an absolute fortune each year through these sales since 1989. This has made owning a personalised number plate no longer such an exclusivity. Living in Ilford, you are bound to notice cars with outlandish statements on number plates. It seems to be part of an interesting phenomena and the film 'PL4TE5' attempts to explore and get behind this mindset. It is in no way 'glorifying illegal personal number plates'. As for the DVLA selling these plates that is correct. It becomes illegal when they are set up on the car to make names. Also if they can not be read by enforcement cameras. On saying that I do think the DVLA can be two faced selling the plates then making it illeagal to make the names up that they know will happen. At present I can not view the film. But well done on those who went out and did something constructive.

When these local films were first brought to our attention, I suggested a visit to the DVLA website and the manager refused to publish this because I was offensive! What happened in the mean time? annesevant:?

i'm sure that the dvla and police will be grateful to you for making their job of identifying those running illegal plates so much easier. whether the owners of said plates will feel the same is debatable. regarding the "ilford" film, i thought it fairly well balanced until i heard "this is immigrants stamping their mark on this culture" from an immigrants mouth. this is one way of ensuring (and i'm not singling out ilford or england here) that the indigenous population will treat you with mistrust.

I had cringed too and kept quiet and I wonder what the nice lady who came to England from the West Indies ages ago (I have met her) and has contributed to the film is thinking now. This type of comment is not 'her' at all.
I am a foreign resident and I am not allowed to 'stamp' my French on this website, so I am confused: double standards? Re the dvla, there are fresh new regulations because the issuers of illegal number plates can no longer do this legally. Alice in Wonderland, that's Britain for you and, yes, I love it here! annesevant.
