I heard a while ago that some money - around 80k I think it was - had been earmarked to be spent on Churchfields Park. At that time ideas were being sought / invited on what to spend the money on. As there is no obvious evidence of any work having taken place yet I'd be grateful for an update on the current position. Also, 80K isn't going to go that far; so, given how well used the Park currently is, (and demand is surely going to increase as developments like the 480 plus Queen Marys Gate are built), can the Council commit more funds to improving the somewhat "tired" play equipment there and perhaps look to install a new sports / leisure feature that will appeal to the teenagers too? That said, I appreciate that because of problems of vandalism etc close monitoring by the Parks Police and PCSOs etc would then be needed in order to protect and safeguard any investment made.
Not in Church End I know, but also I'd be grateful for an update on improvements to Elmshurst Gardens. A football pitch has been marked out but no sign yet of any goalposts. Similarly, it would be useful if the perimeter fencing around the two tennis courts could be repaired / replaced. Again from attending an Area 2 meeting last winter I thought that money had already been commited and that much of this work was to have been completed by now?

I'd like to echo Ken Bean's comments above re: both of these play areas. Any news?

I also had heard that the play area at Churchfields and ray Lodge Park were going to be improved and that money had been allocated for this purpose, but have yet to see or hear anything further. I find it both amazing and frustating that the playground facilities in this highly residential area are so apauling and dated. I dont understand why and how other boroughs and areas are able to cater in providing exciting and modern playgrounds that are worth taking the children too. Why are Redbridge incapable of providing these facilities???????

The position with Churchfields Park is that an amount of money has been allocated to Redbridge out of the Big Lottery fund. This money is only available in the second half of this financial year., i.e. after the end of September.
There are various confditions attached to the funding, in particular that the Council consults with those who may be likely to use any equipment etc before they complete their design for the play areas and bring in any new facilities.
I agree that it is a slow process but we are keeping an eye on things and making sure that the officers keep us up to date with progress.
A lot of effort went in to winning the funding, including from Councillor Sinclair who lives near the Park, so we are keen to make sure that the funds are used and, we hope, that we see a tangible improvement as a result.
I think we are all keen to see the condition of our parks improved, although it is always a bit of a battle to get the funds to do so and frustrating when people vandalise the equipment and ruin the play areas for those who want to use them.

That is great news. Are you able to provide details of when the council will be meeting to discuss this matter and who they will be consulting with to enable best design and what equipment to provide. I have three young sons and many friends with children who are redbridge residents, also the park is just across the road from churchfields school which has approx 850 pupils, I guess they might have a few good ideas as well. I understand the concerns regarding vandalisim but I hope that wont put redbridge off, I cant believe we have a worse problem than many other areas. I would be interested to hear, thanks.

This could be a really worthwhile Citizenship project for Churchfields pupils with geography, and design and technology potential as well. I hope you ask them.

More good news, work begun on this a week ago. Apart from the back breaking mud bath that the workers are finding themselves in due to the rain, the playground is looking lots of fun and spanking new with highlights that include more swings and a climbing frame/climbing wall. I think I heard a contractor say that it should be completed in another week. Who submitted the lottery bid which has funded this?

We hope that the outcome of this work will be a significant improvement in the facilities in the park. The lottery bid was submitted by Redbridge Council but there has been a lot of input from local residents, and from Councillor Sinclair (who has taken a particular interest in the park), who have been very keen to see the bid put in and the money used to improve the facilities for young people.
We will be interested to hear comments about the work once it is completed.

My children used the park yesterday; it is fabulous. It was heaving with happy children. A big thank you to everyone involved, including Councillor Sinclair.
Would it be possible for the council to consider attracting funds for a couple of the smaller skateboard ramps for the local teens within the park? I know the site is rather waterlogged so probably not suitable anyway? Yet maybe another location could be found for this?
