Hi Everyone,

You may have seen the recent activity at The Alfreds Head in recent days.

Given it's recent history I wondered what people thought about it re-opening?
What sort of person / people would you like to see run it?
what does the area need from such a venue given its position in the community?

With the decline in places for families and some nice evening entertainment which again has been killed off by large chains turning local pubs into places to eat. Which in most cases are gloryfied microwave meals. Ironically considering it's disasterous last few years could this be the last venue within a number of miles that really provides what people want instead of yet another bland, large corporate chain, cheap meal venue?

The 'Nut' always has been associated with...erm...elements of the community who have their own 'vested interests', and those 'interests' have not always been for the benefit of the community.

The link between Poverty and drugs is well known, and until the 'authorities' change their attitude from

"there is money in Hainault, so I don't think throwing money at the problem will solve it" to

"yes there is poverty in Hainault, the schools need investment, there is high unemployment, little to no job prospects, and the youth need to be engaged in a direct and meaningful way, so as not to end up on the receiving end of a two year custodial sentence for dealing cocaine in the Alfreds Head"

Unless that happens, the reopening of the 'Nut' will go the same way as it has done for the past 30 years, and no amount of 'new management' will change this.

Family Pub?, the drugs will be hidden in the pram!, call me a cynic, but a pub makeover will not change 30 years of poverty, youth unemployment, lack of housing, lack of ambition, little to no prospects, drug / alcohol abuse and onto dealing.

I suspect the 'Nut' will eventually go the same way as The Badger, The Old Hainault Oak, The British Legion and the Docklands Settlement Site.

Stringing it out will only prolong the misery.

The Alfreds Head is the ideal venue for a new youth and community centre, right in the heart of the community, it would provide a great venue for a multi-activity centre for children, young people and families complete with Big Screen Gaming and IT / Internet Cafe both for educational learning and networking.

The bar could remain and become the central focus, serving exciting, non-alcoholic smothies and cocktails plus nutritional and healthy food. It would provide an ideal training venue for local people to learn catering and hospitaility and to gain experience in youth and community work through volunteering as part of it's activity room.

Upstairs could either serve as temporary accomodation for local people and as meeting and activity rooms or for advice and support for all local people requiring legal, benefits and housing advice, including support in gaining employment, CV writing, training or further educational guidance.

Local vision could create many more possible reasons for a site like this former pub presents

All areas need a focal point, one that promotes community well-being, a place where people can gather together. Don't look to governments to change local communities, they've tried and failed and will fail again.

Communities can only change when they become pro-active and become the change - if you are not part of the solution then you remain part of the problem, so catch a vision for the community, be part of it and lets start to look at how the community can have a place to be proud of and work together in making it happen

As much as I'm inclined to agree with CommunityAngel, but there once was a time when pubs used to be community centres. And I really would like to see this building turned into a *proper* pub/family restaurant with a decent management. Is it really that difficult?

But apart from that, does anybody know what's *really* going on there?

According to This Article the troubled pub is being taken on by these local lads.

Quite what a revamp and renaming the pub 'The Hineholt' will do remains to be seen.

I have to admire their optimism.
