Many will already be aware of the sad death of Wanstead Ward Councillor Allan Burgess in the early hours of 5 February following his fight with cancer.
Allan was first elected to Redbridge Council in May 1990. A retired senior police officer whose career began in Wanstead, Allan soon became known as a councillor who worked hard and battled to secure the best for the residents of the ward he represented, and where he and his wife lived. He held a number of responsible positions in the council's structure and served as Leader from March 2003 to May 2004. Always keen to promote the council, Allan often acted as unofficial mentor to new and inexperienced councillors. Generally easy going and friendly, Allan disliked intensely anything that smacked of disloyalty, and indeed those people whom he had reason to regard as disloyal.
He gave unstintingly of his time to the residents of the ward he reprsented, to the governing bodies of two local schools as well as to the local youth centre, and to those local organisations that needed and asked for his help and advice.
Sympathy at this time goes to his wife and family, as well as to the many friends that he made during an active life devoted to the needs of other people.
May he rest in peace, and may light perpetual shine upon him.

In memory of Cllr Alan Burgess, the Day Service Unit at Corner House (2 Grove Park), Wanstead, will be renamed the Alan Burgess Centre.
The official renaming is planned for this summer.
Cllr Burgess had been a member of Redbridge Council since 1990 and served as the Leader of the Council from March 2003 to May 2004.
He served on many Council bodies and was the Cabinet Member for Housing in 2002/3 and Chairman of the former Corporate Performance Quality Committee, Health Scrutiny Committee, Licensing Committee and Cycle Liaison Group. He also served as a Council representative on many external bodies.

Is there a particular reason why the council was so stingy with its invitations to this event?
